Course Description:
This course will train students and scholars in both academic and social English. According to the needs of the specific students enrolled, this course will include the following formats and skills:
- Targeted grammatical areas that are especially difficult for international students performing at top academic levels: phrasal verbs, prepositional phrases, relative clauses, etc.
- Discussions of both social and academic topics in a small group that includes at least one native speaker. To help students improve the quality of the spoken interaction, each discussion will include focusing on particular grammar and vocabulary.
- The pronunciation of English rhythm, intonation, phrasing, and problematic vowels and consonants.
- Instruction and targeted practice in aural comprehension of lectures, efficient note-taking, and using these notes in answering test exercises.
- Review of the vocabulary most frequently used in academic and technical English.
- Reading: practice and intensive discussion of written texts.
- Practical exercises in using a monolingual dictionary and a thesaurus, in order to get the maximum benefit from written sources to achieve the “deepest” English possible.
- “Field trips” with native speakers to various locations, integrating new cultural information with interactive speaking. To help students improve the quality of the spoken interaction, we will prepare for each trip by focusing on particular grammar, vocabulary, and culture.
- Cultural traits of Americans that can help in understanding and engaging with them on a deeper level.
